Israel has approved the construction of a new Jewish settlement in the West Bank in a move viewed as a new blow to the peace process.
Israeli radio said a committee has given preliminary approval for the construction of 20 housing units in Maskiot in West Bank.
Although Israel has committed not to establish new settlements in the West Bank, in recent months it has announced the construction of hundreds of new Jewish settlement homes in the territory.
The Palestinians have repeatedly called the settlements the greatest obstacle to the US-brokered peace process and US secretary of State Condoleezza Rice branded the constructions as 'a problem'.
